Events Manager

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art seeks a dynamic, experienced, and creative special events professional to manage, develop, and implement all aspects of Development Department events including opening receptions, member and donor cultivation events, and fundraising events. Responsibilities also includes general oversight of other Museum events and activities such as Capital Campaign, and Curatorial Support Group events.


The Event Manager will: proactively manage events in collaboration with staff across the Museum to ensure communication is effective and cooperative; prepare all annual Development event and exhibition budgets, and maintain financial records for events; consult on event planning and implementation for all other Museum departments; provide recommendations on ways to eliminate operational problems and improve the organization and execution of events; coordinate and supervise event volunteers as needed; attend events and assure pre- and post-activities are properly implemented; and interact with donors and guests during events.


This exempt position reports to the Director of Development.  A Bachelor’s degree is preferred, and the position requires a minimum of three years planning and implementing fundraising and donor cultivation events.  


  • Exemplary organizational skills.

  • The ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, with people at all levels of an organization.

  • Knowledge of catering, banquet, and event planning best practices.

  • Ability to oversee and coordinate contractors and services relating to events.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks while working independently.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite and familiarity with Raiser’s Edge database management software.
