Major and Planned Giving Officer

Excellent full-time opportunity for an experienced Major and Planned Giving Officer with at least 7-9 years of relevant experience, reporting to the Executive Director at the Ventura College Foundation. Ideal candidate will be a strong, collaborative, energetic individual with seasoned major gift fundraising skills.  


For over 30 years, the Ventura College Foundation (a 501c3 non-profit) has raised more than $25 million for Ventura College and its students in the form of scholarships, grants and other program support.  The Foundation has assets of over $10 million, and receives support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and its Weekend Marketplace operations. The Foundation is governed by a 23-member Board of Directors, and works toward an annual fundraising goal of $1-M from annual giving, major giving, and planned giving efforts. Database size is 40K+ records.


The Ventura College Foundation assists Ventura College in facilitating student success and grows the impact and legacy of Ventura College as a vital community asset. The college serves over 13,000 students by providing innovative instruction and support services.  Committed to diversity, Ventura College has been designated a Hispanic Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education.


The Major and Planned Giving Officer is responsible for managing the major and planned giving program as part of the comprehensive development program for the College, building a solid donor base for both unrestricted and restricted needs (multi-year pledges and/or single gifts of $5,000-$50,000 per year). The Major and Planned Giving Officer is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major and planned gift donors and prospects for restricted and unrestricted needs in support of the Foundation’s mission (recent planned gifts range from $20,000-$500,000). 



  • Develop annual work plans related to major and planned giving that include goals, objectives, tactics and milestones; create and monitor annual budget and expenses.
  • Develop a portfolio of major and planned gift donors and prospects and proactively manage relationships with them, moving strategically toward individual goals and through the development cycle—identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and re-solicitation—with particular attention to follow-up and follow-through.
  • Visit with 1-3 donor and donor prospects per week.
  • Staff Executive Director to ensure that she has 1-3 weekly meetings with donors and donor prospects.
  • Utilize standard major/planned giving methods and tools, adapting to best benefit Ventura College Foundation’s program.
  • Create and implement a specific plan to increase planned gifts and increase visibility of the Legacy Society.
  • Work closely with our Database Coordinator to log in call reports, next steps and other information in timely and complete fashion
  • Regularly review major donors and prospects with Executive Director.
  • Provide support to and staff Board members as well as College leaders, faculty, and staff as relates to major and planned giving programs.
  • Collect, analyze and evaluate relevant data to understand critical segments, effective methods and modes of communications for each and to assist with potential major and planned gift prospects. Work with finance and development department to ensure timely processing of gifts, their accurate recording and prompt acknowledgement. Assure that stewardship for major and planned gifts is timely and appropriate, including, with donor approval, recognition in publications/media. Create and present internal and external reports on progress and effectiveness throughout the year.
  • Utilize and recommend electronic and peer screening, research and other tools to assist in developing strategies for donors and prospects. 
  • Work closely with College administration, faculty and staff to fully understand programs, projects and needs identified as funding priorities, and present these to donors and prospects.
  • Write proposals, gift agreements, discussion memos, case statements, marketing pieces, program information sheets and other materials to further strategies. Write planned giving pieces for various newsletters, etc. used by the Foundation and work with planned gift vendors as appropriate.
  • Develop and manage events and other activities, including those for Legacy Society, to further major and planned gift goals.
  • Collaborate with others to assure progress in overall development goals and plans, assisting and participating as requested.
  • Keep abreast of the major and planned giving fields through appropriate list-serves, blogs, websites, publications, webinars and conferences/seminars, and share with other development staff.



  • Bachelor’s degree and 7-9 years of progressive, successful, and specific major and planned giving experience.
  • Understanding of and experience in managing a major and planned giving program, preferably in higher education.
  • Knowledge of Ventura County and Southern California philanthropic communities preferred.
  • Understanding of fundraising regulations and accepted best practices. Knowledge of and experience in using standard methods and tools of Major and Planned giving.
  • Ability to identify appropriate segments of donors and prospects and create cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities that build loyalty and trust.
  • Ability to design and implement plans in effective and timely way.
  • Strong organizational and analytic skills; ability to produce complex analytical, verbal and graphic documents; ability to work independently, following through with minimal direction. Strong project management skills; ability to track multiple projects simultaneously and assure follow up and follow through for all. Ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationship building and sustaining with ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals and constituencies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, deep experience in using donor/prospect databases, preferably The Raiser’s Edge, and experience with prospect research tools.
  • Knowledge of planned giving methods, particularly bequests and annuities, and ability to articulate use of planned gift vehicles to donors and prospects.
  • Strong, confident speaker in personal interactions as well as presentations.
  • Ability to understand and synthesize College programs, projects and other needs in order to develop strong cases for support.
  • Skill in writing Development-type pieces, including proposals, gift agreements, thank you letters, marketing pieces, program information sheets, case statements, etc..
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to travel throughout Ventura County and occasionally beyond.

  • Full-time position: 40+ hours per week with medical benefits.
